Lost the ‘Social site’ buzz

July 9th, 2007 by Duncan Simpson

A little bit ago, something called Twitter came onto my online radar (don’t ask me where from, I have no idea!).  Twitter, along with similar clones and versions under different guises, is a social networking site that offers a mini personal blog to tell the world, or just your friends what you’re doing now.

Must admit I got quite caught up in it, as the whole thing is a simple yet quite cool app.  Trouble is, until five minutes ago, I hadn’t actually updated my Twitter account for nearly two weeks, and I can’t honestly say I’m that bothered to keep it going anymore.

As much as it’s decent app, the people that I have on my list (all five of them! Damn I’m so popular!) I’m likely to keep in touch with either personally, via GBS or my own personal blog.

I’m beginning to feel that the social site bubble has burst, or at least suffered a small puncture.  That may be a personal opinion, but I’m beginning to question how far Twitter, Facebook, and their ilk can last.

MySpace is probably the best example (and worst) of how to create a successful social site. I can’t stand the place, as it seems to mostly be a home for trolls and outcasts desperate to get some ‘friends’, virtual or otherwise, and no-one yet has been able to convince me otherwise.  It has its place in todays online community, but again, does it have the potential to stay as a big online presence?  Or will it end up as another ‘Oh, you still use that?’ app?

Twitter?

May 1st, 2007 by Phil Collins

You may have noticed a new part of the sidebar over there on the right (>>) and you may be asking yourself - what on earth is twitter? Well, I will explain all for those of you who don’t know.

“Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send “updates” (text-based posts, up to 140 characters long) via SMS, instant messaging, the Twitter website, or an application such as Twitterrific.” - Thanks to Wikipedia

So essentially I can send a message from my phone to update my friends and readers on what I’m doing. It could be thought of as Big Brother but then I’m doing the sending. I’ve only been using it for a few hours so far and have just updated by sending a text - it came through very quickly. Keep an eye on it and I’ll try and let you all know what I’m up to.
