The end is nigh, I thought!

March 30th, 2007 by Duncan Simpson

At last, I managed to finish Rainbow Six: Vegas after the 360 lost my first save point because it was being a bar-steward.

Oh the joy and satisfaction……..

Well, no.  It’s more like ‘you’re bloody kidding me!’  If you haven’t finished the game, ignore the next few lines.

“To be continued”  F£^$ OFF!

I thought Gears of War had a naff end, but “To be continued”.  Ubisoft, you are gits of the highest order.  Are you so scared that the next RS game won’t sell that you have to use this lame hook to get people in to the next one?  Or do you plan to release a swathe of downloadable expansion facts to continue the fight?

This has really soured the experience for me. I want an ending when I’ve just gone thorough some tough ass levels, god knows how many times, to say ‘well done, you saved the world, you rock!’  Not to tease me with the fact that I haven’t actually reached the end, and there is no evidence of where that end is, or indeed when it’ll be released, if at all.

If this is how things are gonna be in Ubisofts new micro-transaction world, they can shove GRAW 2 right up their **the following content has been edited for taste and decency by the GBS Anti-Rant technology.  We apologise for any inconvenience.**

There, I feel better now.

If only everything was Mac!

March 29th, 2007 by Phil Collins

No seriously. After using an Apple Mac for a while you begin to wonder why everything can’t be Mac-ified. The one that got me yesterday was mice scrollbars and sideways scrolling.

On the Apple mouse I use with my iMac I have a little ‘nipple’ which is a small ball which I can glide up, down, left and right and depening on how I move it the application I’m in will scroll in a paticular way. Scroll it left and right in a huge spreadsheet and the spreadsheet will also move left and right.

Yesterday, working on the PC at work, in a large Excel spreadsheet (don’t ask!) you have no idea the amount of times I tried to push the little scroll wheel to the left or right and each time for a split second my brain could work out why the screen wasn’t moving. (for split second read two minutes - ed)

As more examples come to light I’ll be sure to post them - as well as the reverse as well.

The Wii, and why Paul hates me!

March 28th, 2007 by Duncan Simpson

He doesn’t really, least I don’t think he does :s

Paranoia aside, I was the one that nagged him to get Zelda on his now soon to be sold Nintendo Wii.  Dunno why the daft arse actually listened to me in the first place, but I should have shut up after about two minutes of telling him about Zelda :TP.  The key phrase was, “I don’t like Zelda,” but I can go on a bit when I get excited about something.

Sorry dude ;)

I must admit however, that I’m beginning to share Paul’s apathy towards the Wii.  It’s like I’m almost trying to make excuses and feign interest to myself about new games for the system.  Yet I look at the launch line up and can count two titles from memory that peak my interest; Mario Galaxy and Heat Seeker.  Even latter I have reservations about.

As I typed on a forum earlier today, part of me wishes I’d waited 12 months before buying into the new console.  Just a shame I can’t stop the ‘Magpie effect’, as I’ve now dubbed it.  A phrase dictionary entry may read something like:

Magpie Effect - to see a new glitter piece of kit, that promises lots of new things, and cannot be resisted.  Especially when you have money burning a hole in your pocket.

We can’t be the only ones thinking this way, can we?

Going, Going…

March 28th, 2007 by paul

…still going! Well for about 4 days anyway.

You may recall in this post that I was thinking about getting rid of my Nintendo Wii. The bad news is that I’m actually getting shut. It’s on eBay right this minute. Considering the fact that I’ve used it about 5 or 6 times since I bought it, it’s just been sat there gathering dust since I bought it on launch day. A waste of money to be honest with you.

I’ve played several games on it, including Red Steel (crap), Rayman: Ravid Rabids (not bad) and Zelda (Dunacn, I hate you ;) ). They’ve hardly been out of their cases. Gem is pretty annoyed with me right now, as she actually got it for all of us to play on, but even the kids can’t be bothered either.

Good bye Wii. You have a bloody stupid name, and I just can’t be bothered with you. I’d rather spend the hours trying to find them last few effin’ orbs on Crackdown. And play Call of Duty 3 that my mate has let me borrow for a while.

If you want to buy it, go here.

Only a week and a half to go!

March 27th, 2007 by Duncan Simpson

There’s now only a short while before Guitar Hero II lands on Xbox 360 sporting tight trousers, a long black curly perm, with considerable amounts of tongue out and Beavis and Butthead style devil horn hand signs.

Feel free to add in your own rock-god related stereotypes!

Come April 6th, Good Friday, myself and Paul will be indulging in our own little Rock Operas, and probably looking like complete and utter pillocks doing so. Do we care? Not a bloody jot, but at least it’ll give our wives something to laugh about.

Paul is somewhat of a veteran of the series, having already purchased both editions on the PS2, but I’m a complete n00b to it all. I’ve been able to play a real guitar for years, nothing fancy, but I can play some of my favourite tunes, mess around a bit, that kind of thing. So why I haven’t picked up GH before I’m not totally sure, although one reservation was how weird it would be going from a real guitar to a mock plastic one with buttons instead of strings.

With around 70 songs and various difficulty levels, this one should keep me busy for a long time hopefully, especially with the promised DLC Red Octane have mentioned. To be honest, as much as I enjoyed Gears and Rainbow Six and their ilk, shooting people or aliens is getting a bit….tedious. Could also explain why I just ordered Tomb Raider: Legend for £15 off play.com.

Now all I need to hear is that Red Octane are definitely making Xbox Live play possible via a future download and I’ll be one happy bunny!

Rock on people!!

PS3 is here!

March 23rd, 2007 by paul

OK, so I’m not actually bothered to be honest.

The price is too much, I don’t really want a Blu-ray player and I don’t have a HD telly (yet). But if I did get one, it will probably get used a bit more than the Wii!

Now then. I know that there will be a few of you out there who will have gotten one by now. All I want to know is, is it actually any good? How does it compare to the Xbox 360? And lastly, were you one of the lucky bastards who received a free 46″ HD telly?

Leave your comments below and I shall read with glee!

Oh, and while you’re at it, if you’ve read this here blog, but never posted a comment before now (and we know there’s a few of you!), let us know where you found out about us!

SSX Blur

March 21st, 2007 by Duncan Simpson

You probably remember me mentioning buying this one a few days ago.  Well I thought I’d post back and give a few impressions.

Firstly the sound, graphics, all that jazz are quite funky, if sometimes a littel functional and bland at times.  DJ Atomica returns on Radio Big to provide quips (repeated over and over) and musical interludes.  Characters return from previous games like Mac and Elise with a couple of extras added in for variety.

Once again, you have three peaks to conquer, with various challenges to take on including tournaments.  Personally I prefer the the races, as the Big Air type trials are somewhat cumbersome, let down I feel by the control method, but more on that in a moment.

Aside from other competitors on course, the whole thing feels empty, lifeless almost.  Ok, I know you’re on a mountain side and it’s hardly going to be thronging with spectators, but there’s a feeling of isolation that begins to branch into breaking that veil of disbelief suspension.  That I’ve never found in the previous titles and it’s quite an alienating experience.

The biggest difference, and for me almost the biggest problem area, is…..well I bet you can guess what I’m going to say.

Control method. Looking like I’m juggling the controllers when all I want to do is turn and jump off a ramp for some trickage mid-air makes me feel like I’m not really in control of what’s going on. You can still do all the usual spins and grabs, handled by 3D directional control of the Wiimote and Nunchuk respectively, but it just doesn’t feel as fun.  Yeah I know, it sounds stupid doesn’t it!  Here we have a control method that in theory would be great for high speed jinks and trickery down a snowy slope, but I can’t help feeling detached.

I’m enjoying it overall, but I can’t help the nagging feeling that I want to go play SSX 3 instead on the Xbox.  It just doesn’t better that experience sadly.
